FINAL REFLECTION: MY ENGLISH PROGRESS

My first composition and my last composition don't varied so much, only I think is my fluency when I write. The difference between my oral presentations is the fluency and my pronuntation, because the first I prepareted a lot and the second not much.
In my blog I use a lot of resources (multimedia, links,..), but I repeted my topics (music, medicine,...). I structured good my ideas. Sometimes I varied vocabulary. In my oral presentations I use resources, like powerpoint, my body lenguage is a little bad, but I have a good structure and my ideas have good organized and my vocabulary is very rich. But I pronunced bad some words. In my writtings I have good structure, contents and connectors, but I think that I need improve my vocabulary.

FINAL REFLECTION: MY ENGLISH COMPETENCE IN 2012

BEST ORAL PRESENTATION:  http://emmaslike.blogspot.com.es/2011/11/oral-presentation.html
BEST WRITTEN:  http://emmaslike.blogspot.com.es/2012/03/can-internet-make-world-better-place.html

I have chosen this oral presentation because it was the best of the two that I have done this year. I think it's my best presentation because although it was boring, I didn't read anything and I spoke very fluently.
Then, I have chosen this written because I did it in class, without dictionaries or translators that could help me, and the truth is that the result has been very good. I am very proud of that.
What makes better my oral presentation is to prepare it most, so I don't read anything and I improve my speaking. What makes better my writtings are connectors that improve my mark.

INFORMAL LETTER

Hi JB!
Thank you for your birthday present. I loved the book Death of a Beekeeper by Lars Gustafsson. It's so interesting, you should read it.
The book is very quick to read and discusses various theories about why bees are dying and the consequences that would bring the world, not only the death of a beekeeper, you already know and already what would be your answer.
As this issue of the bugs you so interested, I think you should have the book gift to yourself and not me, because you know I hate them. But then again, THANKS!
I have really wanted to see you. I hope that these months pass soon and I get back with you in our favorite city talking until late at night.
 With love, BJ.

I love you!

A FORMAL LETTER

United Nations Human                                             C/ Sant Pere Martir 7
Rights Committee                                            Castelló d'Empúries, 17486
New York                                                           Girona. Catalonia. Spain

                                                                            20th of March of 2012

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to complain about some aspects of Article 26 of the Declaration of Human Rights and education in my country.
In my country, primary and secondary school has always been free (as indicated by the first paragraph of Article 26 of the Declaration of Human Rights) and it remains so even if we ignore that since I entered the secondary school, I pay 30 Euros for "teaching material" each year.
But unfortunately in Spain, public education does not have the same quality as 10 years ago. The reason has been the crisis and our government (and many other countries) has made cuts in the education sector, so that we can not have as many teachers, as many classrooms or as many free teaching material that we need.
So my claim is that in the Declaration of Human Rights put that although a country is in crisis public education not only has to be free, but also quality.

Yours Faithfully,

The light of the moon.

DESCRIPTION OF PERSON THAT MAKES YOU AN IMPRESSION

PABLO

I met Pablo for the first time in 4th of ESO. He was fifteen and he was from Barcelona. He was quite tall, brown-eyed, he had big ears, a good nose, he had brown-hair, big hands and spoke strange Catalan. We went to the same class in computer studies and we became friends a little time after meeting. Pablo made an impression to me because I never met a person like him. He’s a careless person, he doesn’t matter anything and everything is good. He’s never angry with anybody, id he doesn’t like someone, he ignores him or her, and it’s fine. He always smiles and laughs, he’s a good-hearted person and when you are with him, he makes you feel good. Pablo is an incredible person and I never regret having met him.

DESCRIPTION OF MY IDEAL PARTNER

It is generally agreed that we are looking for a perfect person for living the rest of our lives.
My ideal partner has to be quite tall and handsome, green-eyed and thick lips. I'd like a broad neck and a broad-shouldered man. I'd like that my ideal partner to eat health food and goes to gym several days in week, too.
My perfect partner has to be rather loving, hot-hearted and thin-skinned. He can't surrender early, because I like people who fight for their dreams.
Nonetheless, the most important feature of my dreamt partner is that he makes me laugh and makes me happy and he understands me and listen all my stories, reflections, thinkings, silly things,...
In conclusion, I want a good guy.

ABSTRACT OF MY RESEARCH PROJECT

My research project is a study of vitamin C in orange juice. In my project, I introduced a theorical framework to vitamin C and differents types of juices and in the practical part I determined vitamin C content in differents tests I carried out.
Regarding vitamin C, I approched its definition, its structure, its behaviour, its determination and its production.
As for the differents types of juice, I gave the definition of differents types of juices, its making and its current regulation.
Finally, the practice, I realised four practices where I prepared the coloring for determined vitamin C and a ascorbic acid solution to standardize. Later, I reckoned a quanty of vitamin C in natural orange juice, I saw differents factors that it affect ascorbic acid and I calculated a quanty of vitamin C of differents elaborated orange juice.

CAN INTERNET MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?

It is generally agreed that Internet is addictive and it turns people crazy. However, sometimes Internet helps make the world a better place to live.
On the one hand, Internet has horrible things like pornography or worst, children pornography, illegal downloads, suplantation of identities, more people are addicted to Internet, the Facebook, Twitter or other social network,...
On the other hand, we can see that Internet helps to show injusticies around the world with applications like Youtube, Blogs, Wikies,... moreover we can see the real situations because, are we sure that the media say it's true? For example, the media didn't say what "the idignate people" wants, although with Blogs and Facebook, we could know the real motives of "the indignate people" and more people united with them.
Finally, I agree that Internet has horrible things. Nonetheless if we avoid this type of things we can have a good Internet and can see the good things of Internet and it makes the world a better place.

DIALOGUE

[Bella and Alice came across on the street.]

Bella: Hi Alice, dear! How are you?
Alice: Ohh! Bella! I’m fine, and you?
Bella: Fine, too. Have you got enough time to make a coffee and talk to me?
Alice: Of course, my darling!

[Later, Bella and Alice enter into a café. They started to talk about plastic surgery.]

Alice: I want a new nose!
Bella: What are you talking ‘bout?
Alice: Bella, I think my nose is so ugly, don’t you?
Bella: Of course not! I think that this idea you have is so crazy, you know? Just keep it off of your mind now!
Alice: Fuck Bella! Let me do what I want! It is that you don’t want to change anything of yourself?
Bella: No! What are you insinuating? D’ you think that I need any plastic surgery?
Alice: No!
Bella: Yes!
Alice: No!
Bella: Yes…
Alice: FUCK NO!
Bella: Then, what do you want to say?
Alice: It was a rhetoric question, Bella!
Bella: Ok…
Alice: Sorry Bella.
Bella: No matter.

ORAL PRESENTATION

VIDEO:

ORAL PRESENTATION OF OSCAR WILDE. Emma Polonio and Pere Gironella from emmapolonio11 on Vimeo.

TRANSCRIPTION OF MY PART:

Now I explain the historic context of Oscar Wilde.
Oscar Wilde lived two situations: the Victorian Age and the Crisis of Dublin. And I start with the Victorian Age.
The Victorian Age of the British history was a period of Queen Victoria's reign from 1837 until 1901, the longest reign of British history up to the present day. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence. Some scholars date the beginning of the period in terms of sensibilities and political concerns to the passage of the Reform Act 1832.
The British population, at the beginning of this period, was rural and they passed to urban population because the country became industrialized and it expanded a network of railways.
The British population was doubled, but the population of Ireland was reduced by half.
And the other part: Dublin.
Dublin suffered a political and economic decline because Ireland was part of United Kingdom from 1801 until 1922, because in 1801 Ireland sign the Act of Union. And Dublin suffered this crisis all 19th century.
The economic part of crisis was why Dublin don't play a role in the Revolution Industrial and they don't have a coal, the fuel of this time, and they don't have a shipbuilding, the transport of this time. At that time, the economic capital was Belfast, that they have coal, shipbuilding and factory of clothes.
The political part of crisis was why the government of Dublin passed to Westminster of London.

Well, one of the important things of Oscar Wilde is his quotes. He talked about a lot of things, but five things talked more.
  • About Life:
  1. "Experience is the name every one gives to their mistakes." I agree with this idea like everybody.
  2. "I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works." I think that this quote is very beautiful and I like so much. He talked about his life and I think that this is a biography quote.
  3. "There are only two tragedies in life: one is not getting what one wants, and the other is getting it." It's a few exaggerarted, but I agree.
  • On love:
  1. "The heart was made to be broken." As Pere said, Oscar Wilde was homosexual and we can understand this quote because he didn't found a real love and his heart was broken.
  2. "They spoil every romance by trying to make it last forever." I agree with this idea because we focus in try to our relationship during forever and we don't see all the beautiful things of a relationship.
  • About relationship and marriage:
  1. "Bigamy is having one wife too many. Monogamy is the same." This quote is very male chauvinist and sexist and I desagree with this quote.
  2. "Those who are faithful know only the trivial side of love: it is the faithless who know love's tragedies." I agree with this quote.
  3. "Marriage is the triumph of imagination over intelligence. Second marriage is the triumph of hope over experience." He try the marriage but it fail because he was homosexual and he didn't like women.
  • To ponder:
  1. "Nothing that is worth knowing can be taught." I agree with this quote.
  2. "Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." I like this quote and I agree.
  3. "The pure and simple truth is rarely pure and never simple." I agree with this quote of the part of the truth never is simple, but the part of pure I disagree.
  • About men and women:
  1. "A man who does not think for himself does not think at all." I agree with this quote. It's the same that be yourself.
  2. "A man can be happy with any woman as long as he does not love her." We can see again that he was homosexual and he didn't like women.
  3. "A man's face is his autobiography. A woman's face is her work of fiction." Weeell, I don't want comment this quote...
  4. "One should never trust a woman who tells one her real age. A woman who would tell one that would tell one anything." Well, he's very male chauvinist and sexist and this part of Oscar Wilde I don't like.
  5. "The strength of women comes from the fact that psychology cannot explain us. Men can be analyzed, women merely adored." When I saw this quote I like so much, but I think that Oscar Wilde think other way and I saw other significated. Well, we know that women are more complicated than men.
  6. "I see when men love women. They give them but a little of their lives. But women when they love give everything." I agree with this quote. Everybody had seen the girls give everything but the boys (not all, but a lot of them) give a little part of them.

Well, I searched references of Oscar Wilde on our days and I found statue of Oscar Wilde by Danny Osborne in Dublin's Merrion Square. It's very funny this statue for the green jacket, the pink parts, the rings and the face. Other is the tomb of Oscar Wilde in Père Lachaise Cementery, as Pere said he dead in France and in the tomb said "I'm sorry for not stand up"., tipical of Oscar Wilde. The last is "A Conversation with Oscar Wilde" by Maggi Hambling, on Adelaide Street, in London. I don't like this statue but it's a reference of Oscar Wilde.

SELF-EVALUATION:
I was very nervous at the oral presentation. I knew what I had to say and I didn't read in all time during my presentation.
Pere speak better than me and he didn't read either. Nonetheless, I don't have much practice talking like him and I think for my English I did very well.
When you talk with a paper in front is easy to talk and express yourself because the only that you have to do is read, but when you have nothing, only your mind when you start talking and you don't have much practice, you lack vocabulary.

I think this has been my best oral presentation and I hope get a good mark.

OPINION ESSAY: CAN WE LIVE WITHOUT HUMOR?

Some people believe that we couldn't live without humor, but in my opinion this is absolutely false.
The humor is a interesting thing of our lives, with humor we see the things with more happines.
Nonetheless we don't need the humor to live.
The thing that we need for live is the happines, but the happines isn't the result of humor. We have a lot of things that makes our happines. For exemple: family, love, friends, ...
That's why I say the humor is a one more thing of a lot of things that makes our happines.
In conclusion, we can live without humor, it isn't necessary.

MY DREAMS

I have a lot of dreams. But, I have dreams that I know it’s possible and others that I know that it’s improbable that I will achieve.
My near dream is that I pass all the exams of second of batxillerat and university entrance examination with the mark that I need to gain admittance in the university that I want to go, the UAB or UB. Later, I want pass all of courses of university with a great mark.
My distant dream is to get a good job where I will earn a lot of money, enough money not to worry about anything and I can live alone (with or without children) with some caprices, I don’t need more.
And my improbable dream is that I want be a recognized scientist and I want to win a Nobel prize.
Apart from that, I want have a good house and have a perfect husband (well, this is imposible).

But, aside from all this, that some circumstances may not be fulfilled because the life is unpredictable, there is one thing I'm sure I don't want to be in the future, I don't want to be a bitter and unhappy.
